Nearly half the world's people now live in cities. 1 And though excessive urbanization is a chief factor in the global environmental crisis, the growth of cities is the dominant demographic trend of the future.2 It is from cities, large and small, that ideas and values will emerge which could well determine the fate of both humankind and the natural environment as we know it.
