Han Dong, "Banished!"
University of Hawaii Press | February 2009 | ISBN: 0824832620 | 250 pages | File type: PDF | 39,5 mb

The cover says "Banished! - a novel". That clarification of genre is needed for a feat of imagination by an author who was only eight when the book's central event took place. That was, the banishment of the Tao family in 1969 from vibrant and rich Nanjing to Sanyu, a poor village in northern Jiangsu province. Banishment is the right word, even though the literal translation of the Chinese title, "Zha Gen"- plus the necessary politically correct gloss- would be "Putting down roots (in the countryside, with poor peasants)".
