As for all my work since 1960, I gratefully acknowledge the support of the U.S. National Science Foundation. A grant from its program in the History and Philosophy of Science supported directly the research presented here. Grants from the programs in Applied Mathematics and Solid Mechanics enabled me to pursue in the context of current research such old ideas as seemed to deserve new development, the results of which may be seen in my recent papers on the efficiency of irreversible engines, absolute temperatures,
and the teaching of thermodynamics to undergraduate engineers. Thus past and present have again, as often before, illuminated each other.
